The GameFly website has no other features than a news section that pulls stories from GameSpot. The GameFly mobile app, on the other hand, has a few extra features. As promised, you can edit your queue while on the go with the app. When your next game is out, you’ll receive a notification on your phone. However, there is a light social component to the program. You can talk about the games you’re playing with other users. Similar to Green Man Gaming’s PlayFire social network, it won’t replace a full social network, but it is a wonderful way to supplement your purchases.
Registering is the first step.
For $15.95 per month, GameFly’s basic subscription allows you to rent one game at a time. The number of games increases to two if you pay $22.95 per month. This is more expensive than, say, Hulu ($306.98 at Amazon UK) or Amazon Instant Video ($306.98 at Amazon UK), but games are more expensive than movies in general, so the price difference is understandable. GameFly also offers a 30-day free trial, following which you can buy everything you can rent at a slightly reduced price.

You fill out your account with the systems you possess after signing up, so you just have to look at games you can play. Modern platforms like the PlayStation 4 ($306.98 at Amazon UK) and Xbox One ($306.98 at Amazon UK) are represented in GameFly’s extensive catalog, as are classic systems like the Game Boy Advance and original Xbox. Movies are also available on GameFly. GOG.com, on the other hand, is a good place to go if you’re looking for classic PC games that GameFly doesn’t have.
Controlled Renting
Apart from a local game shop or a pharmacy Redbox, GameFly gets a pass because it’s pretty much the only big video game rental service left. If there were any competitors doing those things better, it would be tougher to forgive its poor game availability and cool but limited PC streaming. However, there aren’t many of them. That isn’t to imply that GameFly is perfect by default. The library contains a lot of depth and breadth, and the mobile app is quite handy as well. But I wish I could say GameFly was the best video game rental service for a reason other than the fact that it’s the only one left.
